11 Plus Non-verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-verbal reasoning is often used to test aptitude levels in children. Although it is not taught separately as part of the primary curriculum, the understanding and skills that underpin non-verbal reasoning are integral to teaching and learning in a range of subjects, particularly maths, science, and design and technology.

Success in non-verbal reasoning does not rely on having strong literacy skills. As a result, it is often used to gauge a child’s ability to:

  • process graphic or pictorial information

  • apply logical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • understand how objects relate to each other in space (spatial awareness)

  • find and follow patterns and rules

  • apply maths skills – rotation, reflection, symmetry
