The Free Bond 11+ Placement Tests

Find your child's level and get recommendations for next steps

The Bond Placement Tests are designed to help you identify your child's strengths and weaknesses across the four 11+ subjects: English, maths, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. This enables you to pinpoint the skills they need to develop and select resources at the right level when beginning 11+ preparation.

Although the tests can be used at any time, they are levelled for children in Year 4 or 5 (ages 9–10).

How to use the Bond Placement Tests

Follow the guidance below to assess your child's strengths and weaknesses in the 11+ subject areas and receive recommendations for further practice.

  • Your child should sit all four tests. If the school(s) you are applying to do not assess one or more of the subjects, you can skip the relevant test(s).
  • Each test should take 30 minutes to complete. The tests do not need to be completed in a single sitting.
  • Ensure your child has a pencil, eraser, and pencil sharpener. You can also provide spare paper for any rough work.
  • The test should be taken on a flat surface in a well-lit, quiet area, at a time when your child is not too tired, and is able to focus.
  • After your child has completed the tests, use the separate answer sheet to mark them. Then calculate their percentage scores for each subject.
  • At the back of the answer pack, you will find recommended practice resources based on their scores.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Placement Tests suitable for both grammar school and independent school exams?

Yes. The Placement Tests are suitable for children preparing for entrance exams for Year 7 admissions.

Different regions and exam boards assess different combinations of the four core subjects. It is best to check with the school(s) you are applying to confirm which subjects will be tested, and then use the relevant Placement Tests accordingly. Most schools assess all four subjects.

Do the Placement Tests need to be completed all at once?

No. The Placement Tests do not need to be completed in one sitting. Allow 30 minutes of uninterrupted time for each test.

You may choose to split them into four separate 30-minute sessions or two one-hour sessions. We do not recommend completing all four tests in a single sitting, as most children will find it difficult to maintain focus for two hours.

Should children receive help whilst taking the Placement Tests?

No. It is important that children complete the tests independently to provide an accurate assessment of their abilities.

Encourage your child to do their best and not to worry about questions they cannot answer - completing as much as they can is what matters most.

If your child has a specific learning difficulty and would normally receive support (such as a reader or scribe) during exams, you may provide the same level of support during these tests.
